The Plainfield Township Board of Trustees has resumed discussions around a new Community Center, including considering a new location.
In March, Township staff presented Board members with two additional site proposals in Belmont. Board members also expressed interest in adding ballot language as early as the Nov. 2 election for voters to decide on the project, if details and plans are ready. The Township is holding the election to fill the vacant Michigan Senate seat for the 28th District.
In February 2020, the Township Board approved ballot language for the May election on a proposed plan to build and operate a new community center. The proposed facility was planned to be 52,000 square feet and cost an estimated $21.5 million to construct and furnish. Proposed to be located on the campus of Northview High School, the multi-use facility would feature a walking track, banquet area, flexible meeting spaces, areas for Northview Senior Programming, fitness room for classes and a gymnasium.
The Board later withdrew ballot language and put the project on pause due to concerns about the Northview Public Schools Board of Education’s lack of commitment to the project and the COVID-19 outbreak.
Township staff now will work on a draft plan over the coming months before seeking community feedback.
